On June 29, Albatross Foundation hosted a beekeeping training day for some thirty members of the GDS Apicole de la Loire. The training took place in three stages.
First of all, a presentation was given by Dr. Huguette Jalon, beekeeping veterinarian, on biological control of the varois parasite, which is harmful to bees.
This was followed by a workshop using one of the biological control methods on a live beehive on the site. The method used is to encase the queen in a cage, preventing egg-laying in the cavities and thus preventing the spread of varois.
Finally, the last very practical workshop involved making anti-Asian hornet harps. As the Asian hornet is larger than the bee, it can’t get into the hive if the harp is placed at the hive entrance.
