What a meeting! The HLSAE holds its first annual meeting on the banks of the Thames

We’re still buzzing from last weekend’s annual meeting in London—the first in our 61-year history to be held on the banks of the Thames, and the culmination of months of hard work. A huge thank you to everyone who made the trip.

“What really sticks with me is the overwhelming sense of community that motivated us to volunteer for our roles in the first place.”

The weekend kicked off with a bang with a reception at Paul Hastings, hosted by HLSAE President Salomé Cisnal de Ugarte, LL.M. ’94, and HLSA President Yvonne E. Campos, J.D. ’88—37 stories above the city, looking straight out at the Gherkin. A reminder that London is as deeply modern as it is rooted in history.

Friday evening was truly special: Alumna Sarah Sackman, KC, MP, LL.M. ’11, welcomed us to the dining room of the Houses of Parliament, where she delivered a heartfelt speech about how Harvard Law School laid the foundation for her to serve her constituents—and especially those who need it most.

On Saturday, participants attended a panel discussion featuring AI experts and legal professionals, followed by a presentation by HLSAE scholarship recipient Anna Bilanová, LL.M. ’22. The evening festivities brought together Felix Dasser, LL.M. ’90, recipient of the HLSAE Award, as well as a high-level delegation that had traveled directly from Cambridge.

The HLSAE doesn’t stop with the annual meeting. Events are already being organized in other cities across Europe. Would you like to organize an event in your city? Contact Salomé Cisnal de Ugarte or a board member today.

Whether it’s reconnecting with colleagues you haven’t seen in years, finally shaking hands with someone you know from Teams, or discovering that the person sitting next to you can help you solve a problem that’s been weighing on your mind—the annual meeting serves as a reminder each year of the uniqueness and strength of our community.

Thank you all for coming! We hope to see you again next year—the location will be announced very soon.
